Sincona sale 69, lot 853

This specimen was lot 853 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 3,400 CHF (about US$4,513 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"THE NETHERLANDS | Province of Holland. 2 Dukaten 1702. Goldabschlag von den Stempeln des Duit. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Netherlands, province of Holland, double ducat of 1702, off-metal strike using duit dies. Very rare, Extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

Copper duits of this design are listed for 1702-80 and are fairly inexpensive tho not often seen at American coin shows. There is also an extensive series of presentation strikes in silver and gold (shown here). The copper duit was one eighth of a stuiver but this coin, which weighed as much as a double ducat, was worth considerably more.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
