Hesse-Cassel 1637-LH thaler Dav-6759
This specimen was lot 33681 in Heritage sale 3098 (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Hesse-Cassel. Wilhelm V Taler 1637-LH MS63 NGC. A standout representative of this elusive and highly popular Taler issue featuring the rampant lion of Hesse-Cassel to the obverse and a stormy townscape to the reverse. The sole example of this variant certified by NGC to date, and notably among the finest recognized by that service for the type as a whole, with only an exceedingly small handful certifying choice. Strikingly toned over serene, glass-like surfaces, with an abundance of golden iridescence throughout." Davenport lists 13 different thalers (Dav-6755, -6757, -6759, Dav-6760, -6761, Dav-6762, -6763, Dav-A6764, Dav-6765, Dav-6766, -6770, -6771, Dav-6772, -6773, not counting double thalers) from Hesse-Cassel for 1637. On this example, the mintmaster's initials are above the lion and rain and lightning blast the leftmost building on the reverse.
