Sincona sale 83, lot 2592

This specimen was lot 2592 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,606 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, ab 1803 Kurfürstentum, Wilhelm VI. 1637-1663. Taler 1637, Kassel. Weidenbaumtaler. Die Münzmeistersignatur LH in der Umschrift. Fast vorzüglich ("Willow" thaler, Mintmaster's initials in the legend, About extremely fine)." Davenport lists 13 different thalers (Dav-6755, -6757, Dav-6759, Dav-6760, -6761, Dav-6762, -6763, Dav-A6764, Dav-6765, Dav-6766, -6770, -6771, Dav-6772, -6773, not counting double thalers) from Hesse-Cassel for 1637. This is one of the scarcer. This example does not exactly match the plate coin in the SCWC, which has the mintmaster's initials under the lion's tail rather than in the legend as here.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen is 28.94 g.

Catalog reference: Müller 2213 a, Dav-6770, KM 180.1.
