Künker sale 335, lot 3939

This specimen was lot 3939 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,047 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HESSEN, HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM. Wilhelm V. 1627-1637. Reichstaler 1637, Kassel. Weidenbaumtaler. Etwas poröser Schrötling, Randfehler, sehr schön. Der Weidenbaumtaler, in den Jahren 1627-1637 geprägt, sollte eigentlich ein Palmbaumtaler (wie auch in einigen Büchern angegeben) werden, da die Palme ein Symbol der Stärke darstellt. Der hessische Stempelschneider stellte die Palme jedoch in der Form der ihm bekannteren Weide dar. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William V, 1627-37, "willow" thaler of 1637, Cassel mint. Somewhat porous, rim bumps, very fine. The design of this thaler was supposed to include palm branches but the engraver, having neve seen palm fronds, used willow branches instead.)"

This "God's wrath" thaler was accompanied by Dav-6753, -6755, -6761, 6757, -6759, -6760, -6762, -A6764, -6765A, -6770, -6772, -6773, -6775, -6775A and -6776. The landgraviate never again issued such a plethora of thalers.
