Hesse-Cassel 1651 thaler Dav-6768
This specimen was lot 2473 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 2,750 CHF (about US$4,145 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, ab 1803 Kurfürstentum, Wilhelm VI. 1637-1663, bis 1650 unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter Amalie Elisabeth von Hanau-Münzenberg. Taler 1651, Kassel. Auf den Tod seiner Mutter Amalie Elisabeth. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Gutes vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William VI, 1637-63, until 1650 under the regency of his mother Amalie Elisabeth von Hanau-Münzenberg, thaler of 1651, Kassel mint, on the death of his mother. Very rare in this condition, About Uncirculated, Attractively toned, Flan flaw on edge.)"
After issuing a flurry of thalers in the 1630's, this state issued almost no thalers for the rest of the seventeenth century. This is an exception. Wilhelm's period of sole rule was cut short by his death in 1663, aged 34 years.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28.91 g.
