Hesse-Cassel 1651-AG 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 278 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,743 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Hessen-Kassel, Landgrafschaft, ab 1803 Kurfürstentum, Wilhelm VI. 1637-1663, bis 1650 unter Vormundschaft seiner Mutter Amalie Elisabeth von Hanau-Münzenberg. 1/2 Taler 1651, Kassel. Ausbeute. Auf den Tod seiner Mutter Amalie Elisabeth von Hanau-Münzenberg. Münzmeister Arnold Galle. Äusserst selten. Gutes sehr schön. Feine Patina. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William VI, 1637-63, until 1650 under the regency of his mother Amalia Elisabeth, half thaler of 1651, Cassel mint, for the mines. Issued on the on the death of his mother, the regent. Extremely rare, Good Very Fine, Nicely toned.)"
This death commemorative was accompanied by a full (KM 220), quarter (KM 218) and eighth thaler (KM 217). Patterns exist in gold (KM Pn9). Wilhelm's period of sole rule was cut short by his death in 1663, aged 34 years.
