Künker Auction 425, lot 2189

This specimen was lot 2189 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,558 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · HESSEN-KASSEL, LANDGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1803 KURFÜRSTENTUM Wilhelm V., 1627-1637. Reichstaler 1637, Kassel. Weidenbaumtaler. Hübsche Patina, winz. Zainende, vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, William V, 1627-37, "willow" thaler of 1637, Cassel mint. Handsome patina, minor clip, extremely fine.)"

Davenport lists 13 different thalers (Dav-6757, Dav-6759, Dav-6760, -6761, Dav-6762, Dav-6763, Dav-A6764 (shown here), Dav-6765, Dav-6766, Dav-6770, -6771, Dav-6772, -6773, not counting double thalers) from Hesse-Cassel for 1637. The obverse, depicting a willow tree buffeted by a storm, is an allegory of the devastation wreaked by imperial forces on the landgrave's domain during the Thirty Years War.
