Künker sale 354, lot 5726

This specimen was lot 5726 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €800 (about US$1,113 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg III. 1760-1820. Einseitiger Pfennig (Schüsselpfennig) 1764, Clausthal. RR Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Heinz-W. Müller 71, Solingen 1992, Nr. 2375. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, uniface penny of 1764, Clausthal mint. Very rare, uncirculated.)"

There is an extensive series of copper pfenning struck for this state (KM 204, 205, 215, 330, 337, 360, 380), most common. This billon piece was struck 1764 only and is scarce. The oval outline suggests that it was struck on roller dies.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: billon, this specimen 0.33 g.

Catalog reference: KM 355, Welter 2882; Smith 256.
