Hannover 1763-IAP pfenning
This specimen was lot 73630 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. Pfennig, 1763-IAP. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS MS-62 Brown. A most attractive example of this type with a very well-executed Wild Man figure on the obverse - detailed and well-defined features and a bit of anatomical free rein courtesy of the die engraver. Burnt umber surfaces with generous amounts of cerulean, particularly on the reverse. An attractive coin. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1760-78 along with another pfenning (KM 337, struck 1761-68) with a monogram obverse. The monogram pfenning bore mintmaster's initials IWS. This denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
