Künker sale 386, lot 5207

This specimen was lot 5207 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,800 (about US$2,326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1749, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube Weißer Schwan. Vorzüglich. (electorate of Hannover, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1749, Zellerfeld mint, for the "White Swan" mine. Extremely fine.)"

The elector must have had a surplus of silver in 1749 as he had eight different thalers struck that year: KM 194.1 (leaping stallion reverse), KM 232.1 (St. Andrew reverse), KM 288 (wild man reverse), KM 291 (White Swan mine, shown here), KM 292 (Cronenburg's luck mine), KM 293 (Lautenthal's Luck mine), KM 294 (Goodness of the Lord mine), KM 295 (Rainbow mine). This "White Swan mine" thaler was struck 1744-45, 1748-52 and 1756. It is not rare but it is expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29,04 g.
