Hannover 1748-IBH thaler Dav-2097
This specimen was lot 4171 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,280 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg II. 1727-1760. Reichstaler 1748, Zellerfeld. Ausbeute der Grube Weißer Schwan. Sehr seltener Jahrgang. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Tönung, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Hannover, George II, 1727-60, thaler of 1748, Zellerfeld mint, for the White Swan mine. Very rare date, attractive example with fine toning, light planchet defects, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The elector struck eight different thalers in 1748, including KM 194.1 (leaping stallion), KM 230 (leaping stallion), KM 231.1 (bust obverse), KM 232.1 (St. Andrew), KM 287 (leaping stallion), KM 288 (wild man), KM 291 (White swan, shown here) and KM 295 (Rainbow mine). This "White Swan mine" thaler was struck 1744-45, 1748-52 and 1756. It is not rare but it is expensive.
