Steve Album sale 51, lot 856

This specimen was lot 856 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $510. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRUNSWICK-LÜNEBURG-CALENBERG: George II, 1727-1760, AR 2/3 thaler, Clausthal, 1747, CPS mintmaster, an attractive lustrous mint state example, PCGS graded MS62, ex Almer Orr III Collection. With King George II's full style titles as 'George the Second, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, Archtreasurer and Prince-Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.'" This type was struck 1740-60 for George II, elector of Hannover, who was also king of Great Britain. It is not rare but it is expensive. Other gulden for 1747 include KM 286 (wild man) and KM 290 (leaping stallion). This is the period of the introduction of the convention thaler, when the gulden slipped from two-thirds to half a thaler.
