Great Britain (1632)-B 2 pence
This specimen was lot 34152 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: Charles I 2 Pence ND (1632)-B MS64 NGC, Briot's mint. If Charles I was ill-fated, the same cannot be said for this coin, which is beautifully detailed and preserved for the type, featuring needle-sharp detail and an original patina, subtle in color but billowing charm. The special nature of the piece is highlighted by the fact that the next-highest example grades 6 points lower at NGC, no others certified in the Mint State range." The SCWC lists numerous tuppence for Charles I, all without photos, so we can forgive the auctioneers for not furnishing the KM number for this piece.
Nicholas Briot (1579-1646) was an engraver and medallist. He failed in his efforts to persuade French mint authorities to adopt modern milling machinery and so moved to London, where he was hired by Charles I. He produced a series of milled coins in the early 1630's (including the double crown shown here) and was sent by the king to Scotland to reform the mint there. He later served with the royalists in the Civil War and retired to France at the conclusion of that conflict. Hammered coinage continued in France until the 1650's and in England until 1664.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
