Great Britain (1631-32)-B penny
This specimen was lot 37060 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1631-32). London Mint. Charles I. PCGS MS-61. Briot's First Milled issue. Ex: Peter Sanders Collection. Ex: L. A. Lawrence Collection." This silver penny was struck by Charles I at the beginning of the period he was attempting to rule without Parliament. Nicholas Briot (1579-1646) was an engraver and medallist. He failed in his efforts to persuade French mint authorities to adopt modern milling machinery and so moved to London, where he was hired by Charles I. He produced a series of milled coins in the early 1630's (including the penny shown here) and was sent by the king to Scotland to reform the mint there. He later served with the royalists in the Civil War and retired to France at the conclusion of that conflict. Hammered coinage continued in France until the 1650's and in England until 1664.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.50 g, 0.925 fine silver.
