Sincona sale 79, lot 1122

This specimen was lot 1122 in Sincona sale 79 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$779 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich, Charles I. 1625-1649. Gold crown of 5 shillings n. d. (1631-1632), Tower Mint under the King. Group B/C mule. Bust 3. Mintmark rose. NGC XF Details. Scratches on obverse." Charles abandoned the laurel coinage of the latter part of James's reign and reverted to the old gold crown (five shillings), double crown (10 shillings) and unite (20 shillings). The early 1630's saw the resumption of experiments with milled coinage, which had been tried and abandoned in the reign of Elizabeth I.
