Great Britain (1630-31) crown Fr-248
This specimen was lot 21046 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1630-31). Charles I (1625-1649). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Elongated bust variety with garnished shield, plume mint mark. Abundant detail remains on the bust and reverse shield with only trivial amounts of doubling appearing in the nearly fully legible legends. Few instances of marks and attractive orange peel tone adds additional elements of attractiveness to this already choice survivor. From the John Whitney Walter Collection. Ex: Stack's auction, October 22-23, 1981." This gold crown (five shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), unite (Fr-246) and double crown (Fr-247). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 34.9 grains.
