Great Britain (1630-31) double crown

Goldberg sale 72, lot 4897

This specimen was lot 4897 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $2,012.50. The catalog description^[2] noted, "Great Britain. Double Crown, ND. Charles I, 1625-1649. Tower Mint under the King. Mint mark, Plume (1630-1). Crowned third bust left. Reverse: Crowned oval shield with CR at sides. NGC graded VF-35." This gold double crown (ten shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), crown (Fr-248) and unite (Fr-253). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
