Sincona sale 82, lot 1603

This specimen was lot 1603 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 19,000 CHF (about US$25,428 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles I. 1625-1649. Double Crown or 1/2 Unite of 10 Shillings n. d. (1627-1628), Tower Mint under the King. Group B. Class II. Bust 2a, in ruff, armour and mantle, no inner circle. Mintmark "castle". Selten in dieser Erhaltung (Rare in this condition). NGC MS61. From the Herman Selig Collection Part I, auction Spink 70, London, May 1989, lot 45. From the Beresford-Jones Collection, auction Spink 29, London, June 1983, lot 105. Finest certified by NGC." This gold double crown (ten shillings) was accompanied by a gold angel (Fr-245), crown (Fr-248) and unite (Fr-246). Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of gold.
