Great Britain (1630-31) crown Dav-3762
This specimen was lot 31199 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1630-31). London Mint; mm: plume. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. Group 2, type 2b1. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, riding caparisoned horse trotting left; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms; Welsh plumes above. Exceptionally elegant and enticing, this specimen presents an even strike across a well produced planchet of good metal. The toning is fairly deep gray, with some hints of champagne, along with some remaining brilliance, highlighting the devices. The finer of just two certified for the type at PCGS. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection. Ex: V. J. E. Ryan Collection (Glendining - 1/1952) Lot # 1064." This is the second crown type for Charles I, in which the king's monogram was added and the cross behind the shield was deleted on the reverse. It was struck 1626-33. Spink[2] lists S-2753 thru S-2762 for the major varieties struck at the Tower mint. The mint struggled to strike these large coins as it lacked the screw presses used in Germany to strike thalers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver.
