This specimen was lot 33080 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1631-32). London Mint; mm: B with Flower/B. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. A RARE variety from Briot's first period of milled coinage, and impressively preserved in this About Uncirculated state. The stately portrait of Charles I features essentially full detail, with only minor areas of dullness from wear, and overall the surfaces bear deep earthy toning, with a hint of royal purple coloration about the reverse. The only example of the variety currently graded by either PCGS or NGC. From the Richard August Collection." Nicholas Briot (1579-1646) was an engraver and medallist. He failed in his efforts to persuade French mint authorities to adopt modern milling machinery and so moved to London, where he was hired by Charles I. He produced a series of milled coins in the early 1630's (including the shilling shown here) and was sent by the king to Scotland to reform the mint there. He later served with the royalists in the Civil War and retired to France at the conclusion of that conflict. Hammered coinage continued in France until the 1650's and in England until 1664.
