Stack's Bowers June 2022 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71113

This specimen was lot 71113 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description^[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Shilling, ND (1632-33). London Mint; mm: harp. Charles I. PCGS EF-45. Fourth Bust, facing left. A wholesome circulated piece with molten gray toning with full readable legends." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I, most without photos. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
