Great Britain (1633-34) shilling

Goldberg sale 87, lot 3078

This specimen was lot 3078 in Goldberg sale 87 (Los Angeles, September 2015), where it sold for $94. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Great Britain. Shilling, ND. Charles I, 1625-1649. Tower Mint under the King. Mint mark, Portcullis (1633-4). Minor surface marks. Toned. NGC graded VF-20." Charles' conflicts with Parliament and his subsequent inability to raise funds cramped the production of coin. The SCWC lists over fifty different types of shillings for Charles I, most without photos. Milled coinage finally superseded the hammered coinage in 1664. However, the old hammered coin was not called in and melted until 1696-97.
