Great Britain (1633-34) crown Dav-3764
This specimen was lot 31201 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, ND (1633-4). London Mint; mm: portcullis. Charles I. PCGS AU-50. Group 3, type 3b. Obverse: Charles, holding sword and reins, riding caparisoned horse trotting left; Reverse: Garnished oval coat-of-arms; Welsh plumes above. An exceptionally pleasing example of the type, presenting great gray toning and only minor, even handling throughout. Some slight striking weakness upon the horse is noted, though rather consistent for the emission. From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection." This is the third crown type for Charles I, in which the king's monogram was deleted on the reverse. It was struck until 1641. Spink[2] lists S-2753 thru S-2762 for the major varieties struck at the Tower mint. The mint struggled to strike these large coins as it lacked the screw presses used in Germany to strike thalers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 30.10 g, 0.925 fine silver.
