Stack's Bowers November 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 77417

This specimen was lot 77417 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Gold 1/2 Crown, ND (1605-06). London Mint; mm: Rose. James I. NGC AU-53." This half crown of James' second issue was accompanied by a rose ryal (Fr-230), angel (Fr-232), half angel (Fr-233), spur ryal (Fr-231), double crown (Fr-235), crown (Fr-236) and unite (Fr-234). With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain." James I was the last monarch to mint this denomination, worth 2½ shillings, in gold.
