This specimen was lot 31550 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $1,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Great Britain: James I (1603-25) gold Thistle Crown ND (1605-6) AU58 NGC, Tower mint. A popular gold denomination of James I, and in an admirable certified grade. An apricot tone warms the recesses of the boldly-struck planchet, lightening into hints of lemon at the highest points; almost fully round besides a minor loss of flan at 9 o'clock. Crisply detailed and a treat to view in-hand, an enticing piece of hammered gold. From the Collection of a Berkshire Gentleman." While previous gold crowns had passed for five shillings, the thistle crown was worth only four. This denomination is unique to this reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.25 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-238, S-2627, N-2096.
