Sincona sale 82, lot 1580

This specimen was lot 1580 in Sincona sale 82 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$7,361 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "James I. 1603-1625. Angel n. d. (1605-1606), Tower Mint. Second coinage. Mintmark 'rose'. Old type with larger shield. Selten (Rare). NGC AU Details. Leicht gereinigt (Lightly cleaned)." When the gold angel was introduced during the Wars of the Roses, it was worth one-third of a pound or six shillings eight pence. It was minted fairly steadily thru Elizabethan times. During the reign of James I, it was raised to ten shillings. A half angel (Fr-233) exists and is very rare.
