Sincona sale 77, lot 2358

This specimen was lot 2358 in Sincona sale 77 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,457 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"GREAT BRITAIN | Königreich. James I. 1603-1625. Gold Britain crown n. d. (1604-1605), Tower Mint. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (kingdom of Great Britain, James I, 1603-25, gold crown, Tower mint. Second coinage. First bust. Mintmark lis. Very fine-extremely fine.)"

This gold crown of James' second issue was accompanied by a rose ryal (Fr-230), angel, half angel (Fr-233), spur ryal (Fr-231), unite (Fr-234), double crown (Fr-235) and half crown (Fr-237). Confusingly, a thistle crown (Fr-238, worth four shillings), was struck at the same time as this piece. With the accession of James I we drop "England" as the country name and adopt the current "Great Britain."
