CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 6630

This specimen was lot 6630 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $196. The catalog description[1] noted, "STUART. James I. 1603-1625. AR Halfgroat. Second coinage. Tower (London) mint; im: lis. Struck 1604-1605. Crowned rose / Crowned thistle. Deeply toned, some roughness and minor scratches. VF. Ex C.J. Martin FPL (Winter 2003), no. H157; R.A. Shuttlewood Collection; R.C. Lockett Collection." This one is dated to 1604-05 by the fleur-de-lys mintmark on the reverse, which mark was reused in 1623-24 and again in 1625 under Charles I. This second coinage superseded a halfgroat (S-2649) with the portrait of the king.

Specification: 1.00 g, 0.925 fine silver, this specimen 16 mm diameter, 1.02 g, 10 h axis.
