This specimen was lot 22723 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. Penny, ND (1604). London Mint; mm: Lis. James I. PCGS AU-55 Gold Shield. The finest graded example in the PCGS census, this handsomely toned piece does exhibit a characteristic short flan, but nevertheless presents great detail and an alluring cabinet nature, along with little evidence of handling." The SCWC mentions two different silver pence for the beginning of James's reign; one with a bust obverse, arms reverse (KM 9, shown here) and one with a rose obverse, thistle reverse (KM 23).
