Cuba 1916 40 centavos
The first specimen was lot 20282 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. 40 Centavos, 1916. NGC MS-63. Lowest mintage of the type for all the circulation issues. Well struck, lustrous and attractive with a lovely champagne tone throughout." The second specimen was lot 20281 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. 40 Centavos, 1916. NGC PROOF-60. Mintage only 50 pieces. Rarer than the 1915 issue. Attractive slate grey tone with highlights of blue." This is the key date of the type struck 1915-16 and 1920. The 1915 and 1920 issues come in high and low relief stars but all the 1916's are low relief.
