This specimen was lot 20359 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Peso, 1916. Philadelphia Mint. NGC PROOF-66 Ultra Cameo. Pale khaki-gold in color with strong Cameo contrast on each side. A dazzling Gem Proof with just 4 examples certified finer by NGC. A spot of oxidation is noted behind Marti's bust, but the surfaces are otherwise flawless." This type was struck 1915-16 during a brief boom caused by a surge in the price of sugar during Wolrd War One.
Recorded mintage: 11,000 plus 100 proofs.
