This type was struck in the United States for Cuba 1915-51. The denomination circulated extensively as worn specimens are common while choice examples are expensive. The catalog does not record the "low relief star" and "high relief star" varieties noted for the larger silver denominations. This specimen was lot 563 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $4,112.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Centavo, 1916. NGC PROOF-66. Mintage of only 104 pieces. Excellent toning. Tied for finest certified by NGC and PCGS. From the Demarete Collection."
Recorded mintage: 9,318,000 plus 104 proofs.
