Cuba SB119-42664r.jpg

This type was struck in the United States for Cuba 1915-16, 1920 and 1938. The denomination circulated extensively as worn specimens are common while choice examples are expensive. The catalog does not record the "low relief star" and "high relief star" varieties noted for the larger silver denominations. This specimen was lot 42664 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $70. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. Centavo, 1920. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Sharply struck with a nice cartwheel effect over satiny surfaces. Slightly streaky toning on the obverse, common on this type. Overall handsome example."

Recorded mintage: 19,378,000, most common date.

Specification: 2.5 g, copper-nickel, plain edge, 17 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 9.1.
