This specimen was lot 6263 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. 40 Centavos, 1920. NGC MS-63. High relief. pleasing steely tone." This type was struck in the United States for Cuba 1915-20. Unlike the pesos, this denomination circulated extensively. This date is scarce compared to 1915. The catalog records "low relief star" and "high relief star" varieties. The 1916 is very rare. The sources do not state why the forty centavos denomination was selected over the more conventional fifty centavos.
Recorded mintage: 540,000 plus a few proofs.
Specification: 10 g, 0.900 fine silver.
