Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71321
SB523-71321r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71321 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "CUBA. 5 Centavos, 1920. Philadelphia Mint. NGC MS-64. Variety with "5.0 G." Steely gray and with some hues of olive, this near-Gem offers a higher level of quality and beauty than is generally encountered for the type." Cuba, having obtained her independence from Spain in 1903, quickly fell into the economic orbit of the United States. Most of her coinage prior to the coming of the communists was made at the Philadelphia mint. This type was also struck 1915-16. A variety exists (KM 11.2) without the dot after "5.0 G", which is quite a bit more expensive.

Recorded mintage: 10,000,000, the most common date.

Specification: 5 g, copper-nickel.

Catalog reference: KM-11.1.
