This specimen was lot 32683 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 5 Pesos 1916 MS64 NGC. Highly desirable, with bright glowing luster and an enviable strike." This type was struck 1915-16 at the Philadelphia mint during a brief sugar boom in Cuba. Most of the mintage remained in bank vaults to back paper money and the type is rarely seen in circulated condition. Gold one, two, four, ten and twenty pesos were also issued.

Recorded mintage: 1,132,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 8.36 g, 0.900 fine gold, .242 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
