Colombia 1871-B peso oro
This specimen was lot 40311 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1871 Peso. Bogotá mint. MS-62 (NGC). A rarity in the series, with just three known to Restrepo and only a very small number of survivors known overall. Rich and lustrous deep orange gold with lighter yellow highlights on the contrasting devices. Subtle pastel tones become visible under a light, showing excellent originality. The two radial die cracks seen on the obverse near 11:00 and 5:00 may have condemned this date to rarity. Far nicer than its grade suggests, a high class example of this elusive first year of the type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This type was struck at Bogotá in 1871-75 and 1878. Medellín also struck this type.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.61 g, 0.900 fine gold, .046 troy oz AGW.
