China 1989 50 yuan KM-222

Sincona sale 85, lot 2143

This specimen was lot 2143 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 180 CHF (about US$242 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA, 50 Yuan 1989, Shanghai Mint. Panda. 5 Unzen Feinsilber. Nur 5'000 Exemplare geprägt, Polierte Platte, Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat, Only 5,000 pieces struck. Choice Proof. In original box with certificate."

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. Other fifty yuan for 1989 include KM 226 (gold panda), KM 227 (palladium panda) and KM 233 (year of the snake).

Recorded mintage: 9,599 per the SCWC, 5,000 per the auctioneers.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine silver, 70 mm diameter.
