This specimen was lot 774 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA (PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC): AV 100 yuan, 1989, Chinese Zodiac Series - Year of the Snake, 1 ounce .999 gold, with original COA and box of issue, PCGS graded Proof 69 DCAM." This denomination was used for numerous NCLT's in 1989: KM 225, 228, KM 229, 230, 234, 235 (shown here), KM 236, 244, KM 252, 255, 258 and 261. The Chinese zodiac series, struck in silver, gold and platinum, is probably the most popular after the pandas.
Recorded mintage: 3,000 proofs.
