China 1990 50 yuan KM-273

Sincona sale 85, lot 2152

This specimen was lot 2152 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 160 CHF (about US$216 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA, 50 Yuan 1990, Shanghai Mint. Panda. 5 Unzen Feinsilber. Nur 5'000 Exemplare geprägt, Polierte Platte, Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat, Only 5,000 pieces struck. Proof. In original box with certificate."

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. Other fifty yuan for 1990 include KM 271 (gold panda), KM 279 (platinum panda), KM 281, KM 284, KM 297, KM 326, KM 327, KM 328, KM 329 and KM 330.

Recorded mintage: 4,000 per the SCWC, 5,000 per the auctioneers.

Specification: 155.5 g, 0.999 fine silver, 70 mm diameter.
