Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 25057

This specimen was lot 25057 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen, 1747-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-62. Just a hint of striking weakness is observed upon the highest points of this otherwise tantalizing issue, offering an alluring tone and a good deal of remaining brilliance emanating from the fields. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. Twenty-four mariengroschen started out as two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of Karl's reign.
