Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1746-IBH pfenning
This specimen was lot 3574 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,617 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl I. 1735-1780. Goldabschlag zu einem Dukaten von den Stempeln des Ku.-Pfennigs 1746, Zellerfeld. GOLD. Justiert, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Charles I, 1735-80. Gold strike of one ducat weight using copper penny dies, 1746, Zellerfeld mint. Adjustment marks, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The regular issue (KM 901.2) was struck in copper 1739-62 and is not expensive. This off metal strike is enigmatic but similar occasions are noted for other German and Dutch states. Another pfenning exists (KM 891) with the leaping stallion reverse but no mintmaster's initials. It is also inexpensive. The denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.
