Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1747-IBH 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74508 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1747-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. NGC Genuine--Bent, UNC Details. This example displays subtle champagne toning throughout. In addition to the bend, a small flan flaw on the obverse is noted for completeness. Ex: Wolff-Metternich Collection." This type was struck throughout Karl's long reign and is common. Twelve mariengroschen started out as one-third of a thaler but had slipped to a quarter thaler by the end of Karl's reign.
