Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1748-IBH 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74510 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1748-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-62. Quite radiant and enchanting, this nearly-Choice minor presents a subtle frosting upon the devices--an aspect that pairs well with the darker peripheral toning. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Kunker (with ticket)." This type was struck throughout Karl's long reign and is common. Six mariengroschen started out as one-sixth of a thaler but had slipped to an eighth thaler by the end of Karl's reign.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
