Künker Auction 425, lot 1497

This specimen was lot 1497 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,832 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM Karl I., 1735-1780. 10 Taler 1748, Braunschweig. GOLD. Seltener Jahrgang. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles I, 1735-80, ten thaler of 1748, Brunswick mint. Rare date, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1742-50, 1753, 1756-64 but all dates are rare. It was accompanied by a similar five thaler (KM 915) and 2½ thaler (KM 913). The duke issued much silver but little gold. The ten thaler matched the Prussian doppelter friedrichs d'or.
