Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 52217

This specimen was lot 52217 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 10 Talers, 1747-EK M. Brunswick Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-61. Standing as the finer of just two seen in the PCGS census, this impressive Mint State example glistens with a high degree of shimmering brilliance, all while some golden-orange toning highlights portions of the reverse. Ex: Coin Galleries (7/2005) Lot # 163. Ex: Coin Galleries (12/2004) Lot # 872." This type was struck 1742-50, 1753, 1756-64 but all dates are rare. It was accompanied by a similar five thaler (KM 915) and 2½ thaler (KM 913). The duke issued much silver but little gold. The ten thaler matched the Prussian doppelter friedrichs d'or.
