Sincona sale 83, lot 2559

This specimen was lot 2559 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 5,000 CHF (about US$6,692 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Braunschweig-Lüneburg-Wolfenbüttel, Herzogtum, Karl I. 1735-1780. Taler 1748, Zellerfeld. Münzmeistersignatur IBH (Johann Benjamin Hecht). Dieser Jahrgang von grösster Seltenheit, vermutlich das einzige bekannte Exemplar (Extremely rare date, most probably the only one known). NGC MS62. Prachtvolle Erhaltung (Magnificent condition). Exemplar der Sammlung Lehmann, Auktion H.S. Rosenberg 29, Frankfurt, November 1909, Nr. 681. Das durch NGC höchstbewertete Exemplar (Finest certified by NGC)." This type was struck 1735-36, 1748-50, 1755, 1760-63 and 1770. While this date may be rare, the type is scarce. Other thalers for 1748 include KM 883 (wild man reverse), KM 920 (Goodness of the Lord Mine), KM 921 (White Swan Mine), KM 922, KM 923 (Lautenthal's Luck Mine) and KM 924 (Rainbow Mine).
