Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1745-IBH pfenning
This specimen was lot 73538 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Pfennig, 1745-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-64 Brown. A strongly struck and lustrous example of this type, the detail served on lovely cobalt-infused chocolate surfaces. A minor planchet clip is noted on the 2:00 obverse, not extending past the denticles of the rim. A very attractive coin. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1739-62 and has a modest catalog value. A few were struck in gold for presentation. Another pfenning exists (KM 891) with the leaping stallion reverse but no mintmaster's initials. It is also inexpensive. The denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
