Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1758-IBH pfenning
This specimen was lot 73539 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Pfennig, 1758/7-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-61 Brown. A charming uncirculated example of the Wild Man type in the pfennig denomination. Well-struck with a glossy chocolate patina. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1739-62 and has a modest catalog value. A few were struck in gold for presentation. Another pfenning exists (KM 891) with the leaping stallion reverse but no mintmaster's initials. It is also inexpensive. The denomination is spelled "pfennig" in modern German.
