Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1758-IBH 12 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73533 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen (1/3 Taler), 1758-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-55. This example offers a well-sculpted and detailed Wild Man on fawn gray surfaces with splashes of gold in the protected areas. An attractive example of the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Includes ticket from Leu." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. Mintmaster IBH appears 1739-62. All of the twelve mariengroschen struck by this duke used the "wild man" design; the "leaping stallion" only appeared on one-third thalers (= half gulden) starting in 1764.
